My pages

100 years ago an artist was planning her "examination piece." She chose to portray events from the lives of the Martyrs in stained-glass. A century later, Miss Margaret Rope's vibrant windows are admired by countless visitors to the Crypt of the Martyrs at Tyburn Convent, London. A Celebration of the Martyrs - in stained-glass has a beautiful photo of each of the 20 exquisite glass paintings and gives opposite the story of the pictured event. The illustrations of the book are taken from the windows which glow all the colours of the rainbow in the afternoon sun.

New publication on the English Martyrs windows at Tyburn Convent

¶This site does not usually contain publicity for other people but this time I had to make an exception!
¶The first time I saw Marga's windows in the crypt of Tyburn Convent near Marble Arch, London, I was deeply impressed by their artistry and the intensity of the painting, and by the stories they told of the English Catholics executed at Tyburn for their faith. It was a theme that Marga returned to several times in her career (as at Oxton in the Wirral) but here she is approaching it perhaps for the first time.
¶Now the windows are being celebrated in a small book containing excellent photographs with descriptions and historical background of each of the windows.
¶The text below is from the convent at Tyburn.
